Beaches and Boys
Now that John is working at a local restaurant and our boat's topside starts to resemble a cluttered front yard (complete with plastic shovels, assorted game pieces, and a bicycle) it has truly hit me that we are staying here in St. Augustine until hurricane season descends upon us!
I have finally admitted defeat in one of my many mommynag vs. boyswarriors battles..."NO RUNNING ON THE DOCKS!!!" They swerve after pelicans, skid to a teetering stop before a slip's end, and slash at imaginary dragons with delight! I smile and surrender to youth's beauty after locking Dante in his "naggie" aka lifepreserver.
We visited family in Cocoa Beach...returning spoiled rotten by soft rugs, big screen TVs, and comfort food. Honestly in shock by our primitive hull and lack of space. Now, three days later, it all seems perfectly normal again...
Multitasking here in the marina lounge...doing laundry and now I'm up for childcare...that would be my farewell song...

ReplyDeleteWe are almost packed up for our first ski trip norwegian style.( cross country) leaving on the 3rd of feb. to minus 18 degrees and over a meter snow just the four of us. Geilo is way out in the wild mountains. We will need to pass the Hardangervidda, a beautiful mountain pass. Looking forward.

Dearest R,
ReplyDeleteHow very Maine of you to pile all the detritus atop the boat. All the comforts of home in one finite place!
It does sound like you are taking it all in stride and enjoying the flow of life around you, seeing it through the eyes and boundless energy of your boys. It is a wonderful time of life and I encourage you to enjoy it all. Your binding-up of Dante into the "Naggie" and letting him be the boy of two, or five, that he is and wants to be is an elegant solution to the problem and wonder every parent faces, or has faced. Thank your stars that they are so full of beans, stout of heart, and able of mind!
The images of the boys playing on the beach are great--all three boys! John looked particularly happy, full of the moment and the pleasure of seeing his sons experiencing life and nature. These are the magical years, full of wonder. Sounds to us that you are doing a masterful job at making them happen and enjoying your own life along the way.
Wouldn't worry much about the lure of technology and excess gagetry with Master Blake. Those things are fleeting at best, outmoded before their useful time, and soon forgotten. What lasts are the things that are most ephemeral, like the star fish on the beach and the marvelous sand castle that Blake made, with all its formidable cannons commanding the sea and land.
Love to all. Miss you much and look forward to a visit. Keep your electronic missives coming. It's such a treat to be able to follow your comings and goings. Wonderful to see that you have followers in the frozen North of two continents! This is technology being used at its best, keeping kindred spirits and hearts together wherever they may wander.

Oh Reb,
ReplyDeleteThe beach looks so fine right about now. We have over 2 feet of snow and it's still coming down! I love reading all the adventures and day-to-day events. We love the videos also. I'll have to post another video of our snow storm. Gonna be chilly tonight... wind chill of 10!
Love, C
